On May 22, 2011, an EF5 tornado devastated Joplin, Missouri – changing lives forever. But out of the rubble, Operation BBQ Relief was born.
In the immediate aftermath of that disaster, a group of competitive pitmasters from eight states mobilized, providing more than 120,000 meals in just 13 days. That spontaneous act of compassion led directly to the founding of Operation BBQ Relief.
What began with a handful of competitive pitmasters and a few smokers has since grown into a movement that has provided over 13 million meals to communities in crisis and to the brave heroes in uniform that stand beside them.
On May 22, 2026, we returned to Joplin to provide 500 hot meals to community members, first responders, and tornado survivors. We honored the lives lost, celebrated Joplin’s incredible resilience, and gave back to the people who inspired our entire mission. The event was about remembrance, gratitude, and continuing to deliver comfort when it matters most.
