Lori Lewis – Free Hugs and Full Hearts
Lori Lewis first encountered Operation BBQ Relief (OBR) in August 2018 during catastrophic flooding in Pennsylvania. While coordinating meals for Port Carbon, Penn., she met a fellow volunteer proudly wearing a red OBR shirt—a simple moment that sparked a lasting connection. Years later, when Hurricane Helene hit North Carolina in 2024, Lori followed OBR’s relief efforts online. Moved by the need, she knew it was time to act.
Her first deployment took her to Hendersonville, N.C., where she arrived ready to help — and left forever changed.
“Nothing makes your heart more full than knowing you have touched another’s heart, given them hope, and brought a smile to their face, even if it’s just for a moment,” Lori said.
Since that initial deployment, Lori has become a dedicated and dependable force within OBR. In 2024 alone, she served more than 120 hours, earning the Bronze President’s Volunteer Service Award and OBR’s Road Warrior Award. Today, she serves as the Pennsylvania Area Coordinator, bringing her leadership and warmth to every mission she joins.
Lori’s heart for service is deeply rooted in the wisdom of her grandmother:
“Fill their belly, feed the soul, warm their heart.”
That guiding philosophy shines through whether she’s on a disaster relief deployment or honoring our heroes in uniform through The Always Serving Project.
Among her most treasured memories are the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals she helped serve last year in North Carolina. Surrounded by her OBR family and grateful community members, Lori rediscovered the joy of the holidays after a period of personal grief.
“I’ve been blessed for the time I’ve had with OBR, the lives I’ve touched, the hugs I’ve given and received, and the memories I’ve made,” Lori said.
Her advice to future volunteers?
“Do it. You won’t regret it,” Lori said. “The only regret will be not signing up sooner.”
Lori brings more than just her time—she brings heart. Whether she’s behind the grill or offering a warm hug, she shows up with kindness, compassion, and a deep commitment to OBR’s mission.
