From April 27 to 28, 2014, tornado outbreaks struck areas across the lower midwest and southeast. In this two-day period, there were 66 confirmed tornados (two of which were rated EF4). Mayflower, Tupelo, and Louisville were struck particularly hard by these tornadoes. On April 28, the town of Tupelo suffered a direct hit from a violent weather system. Winds reached up to 170 miles per hour, and there was an EF3 tornado estimated to be 1 mile wide. One person was killed and several were injured. Thanks to its growing volunteer base, including competition/catering teams willing to bring their own smokers, Operation BBQ was able to simultaneously deploy to three separate locations!
