The Waldo Canyon Fire started approximately four miles northwest of Colorado Springs on June 23, 2012. The fire caused the evacuation of over 32,000 residents throughout Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, and Woodland Park. Approximately 346 homes were destroyed by the fire and U.S. Highway 24 had to be closed in both directions. Operation BBQ Relief volunteers deployed and faced the unique challenge of cooking BBQ in the middle of a forest fire. The volunteers used propane instead of wood fires and were still able to provide BBQ meals to first responders and victims.
