West, Texas (Explosion) / 16,000 Meals over 8 Days

On April 17, 2013, a massive explosion and fire occurred at a fertilizer plant in the small town of West, Texas. Fifteen people were killed, more than 160 were injured, and more than 150 buildings were destroyed or damaged.

Operation BBQ Relief volunteers arrived April 18th, setting up and even serving 500 meals that same evening. During the initial 4 days of deployment, we served hot meals to residents and first responders, and even catered two memorial services for fallen firefighters.

We left at the end of the fourth day because other organizations were in place to help feed the town. But they unexpectedly pulled out the same day as we did. So, OBR was asked to come back. And that’s exactly what we did! We returned the very next day and provided hot BBQ meals to residents, first responders, and community volunteers for another 4 days!
